Chadds Ford, PA | A Countryside Proposal

If there is one thing that has rarely been a part of our relationship, it is surprises. I am too much of a control freak to know something is going on, and Josh is too horrible at keeping surprises to not tell me whats going on when I start going nuts. So, as you can imagine, a day full of surprises with no hints (other than what to wear – which ended up being bad advice anyway) threw me off just a little bit.

It was the Saturday before Christmas and me, being the last minute shopper that I am, had so much to do and no time to do it. When Josh suggested that we have a date day and do everything “later”, I was reluctant. I thought about it for a few minutes and realized that in the midst of the hustle and bustle of December, it was exactly what we needed. So I agreed. That is when he told me that he was planning the whole thing and that all I needed to do was to dress warmly and not wear my typical Saturday attire: yoga pants and a hoodie. Of course I told him that wasn’t enough information and that I needed to know exactly how cold I would be and that I would like to know where we were going too; and that I would have a better time if I knew what we were doing. This is usually when Josh caves and tells me what is going on so that he doesn’t have to hear about it for the rest of the day. BUT he stood his ground. I was shocked and a little annoyed, but I decided to be “spontaneous” and have a good day; that I could trust him to have thought of all of the details that I usually figure out. He was so cute and excited about what he had planned and I didn’t want to ruin it for him.

We got in the car and were off. Through Phoenixville, onto 202, and into Kennet Square we went. I thought for sure I had our destination figured out just as soon as we turned onto a familiar road to me, but he kept going and I was stumped once again. We drove for what seemed like miles down a narrow driveway deeper and deeper into the country. That is when I saw the horses and started to get giddy. I have always loved riding and everything to do with horses. I even purchased a pair of real riding boots and breeches this year even though all I plan to do in them is walk. I know I am a poser, but it feels so right lol. I asked him if we were going riding and his smile confirmed my hopes.

Although I was wearing boots with 4 inch heels, we had a wonderful hour long ride throughout the countryside. Why he didn’t advise me to wear my riding boots is still a mystery, but I have come to the conclusion that he just wanted to laugh at me as I rode a horse in heels.

I was loving my mystery date day so far, but I knew there was more to come. It was a short trip to The Gables in Chadds Ford, one of our favorite restaurants. I noticed that the parking lot was pretty much empty, but just figured that we were really early. They had just built a new patio onto the back designed for parties and weddings and Josh wanted to show me it before we went in because we had previously talked about it as a potential wedding venue. It was cold and I was hungry, so I was trying to hurry the tour along and that’s when it happened. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a tiny box.

He got down one one knee, smiling and shaking, and asked me to marry him.

I’m not sure if I even said yes in words, it is all somewhat of a blur now – my answer came in the form of a giant hug and my uncontrollable laughter! I could hear a door open and close along with the clicks of a camera and looked up to see one of my best friends in the entire world and cousin – Meagan – capturing the entire moment on camera.

I am so excited to be able to share these moments in photographs that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. Thank you Meagan!

I will be sharing some of my wedding planning, Pinterest boards and a lot of other details as I head into wedding planning mode for our September 14th wedding!
